How We Turned Fender’s SEO Blog into a Sales Conversion Force
What We Did
Fender’s Resource Center is an 800-article strong, information-rich blog that brings significant organic traffic to Fender.com. But once people landed on it, the experience failed to convert them into actual customers.
We worked hand-in-hand with Fender's marketing and technology teams to change that by reimagining the user journey, optimizing for conversion, and integrating their e-commerce platform to connect marketing and sales.
The Challenge
From a usability standpoint, one of the biggest issues was isolation. Users would land on a page from Google, but there was nowhere to go after that. Guitarists couldn’t dig deeper into content and Fender couldn’t connect content to products. There was no clear path from reading about guitar technique to trying Fender Play or purchasing recommended gear.
The technical setup presented its own obstacles. The content publishing tools, set up years earlier, had not evolved with the rest of the site, leaving content and e-commerce on two disconnected platforms. Without e-commerce integration, any link to a product page became outdated as soon as inventory or product offerings changed. Managing crosslinks, promotions, tags, and products across 1,000+ articles was impossible.
And because of the high amount of site traffic these pages received, we couldn't take them offline to rebuild them.
“We definitely saw the project as a success. We saw our e-commerce revenue go up 17%.”
Keys for Success
To turn this content into a conversion engine, we needed to deliver on three objectives:

Make Content Easily Navigable
Articles needed clear categorization and improved usability so readers could find what they needed to make confident purchases.

Connect Content to Commerce
Integrate Salesforce product data so articles could recommend gear with real-time pricing and availability.

Drive Fender Play Adoption
Create a clear conversion path from Lesson articles to Fender’s subscription e-learning platform, Fender Play.
The Solution
Improving conversions came down to a series of well-executed, series of UI improvements. We started by establishing our building blocks, creating four new article templates - Homepage, Category Page, E-Commerce Article, and Lesson Article - so we could individually optimize the features and conversion path for each.
Improving Clarity & Usability
We did an extensive audit of the 1,000 articles to identify opportunities to simplify the information architecture. Based on our findings, we reorganized the library into four primary categories and eleven subcategories, making it easier for users to scan, navigate, and explore related content.
Connecting the Systems
The first technical challenge was bridging Contentful and Salesforce. We worked with Fender's team to build API integrations that dynamically pulled product data directly into articles, showcasing specific guitar models with real-time pricing and availability, rather than generic product mentions that quickly became outdated. To take full advantage of the integration, we designed the e-commerce article template to showcase recommended products alongside the content, with a sticky right rail on desktop to keep featured gear consistently visible as users read.
Building for Conversion
Lesson pages incorporated persistent Fender Play CTAs in a sticky left rail, making it clear that readers could continue learning through the subscription platform. For long articles, we added sticky navigation with anchor links to major sections and a progress bar showing scroll depth. Breadcrumbs linked back through category pages to the Resource Center homepage, improving both user navigation and SEO.
Migrating without Downtime
Even though this was such a massive update, taking the site offline was not an option. Instead, we managed the migration through continuous scripting - taking snapshots and updating articles incrementally rather than attempting a single high-risk cutover. We converted existing markdown content to Contentful's Rich Text fields through specialized scripts, preserving all 1,000+ articles while upgrading the technical foundation underneath.

Collaborating as Partners
The coordination extended beyond just our team and Fender's marketing group. We worked directly with their IT team to set up AWS infrastructure for improved page rendering, aligned with their SEO manager on URL structure and 301 redirects to preserve search rankings, and integrated with their CRM team on email capture features.
“They were able to come in, understand our two systems, and work really closely with our development team. It’s been a pretty amazing work experience.”

Results
The impact was immediate and impressive:
In Conclusion...
The new templates turned every article into a strategic asset. Beginners could land on practical advice, discover related lessons, see recommended gear, and easily transition to Fender Play trials or product purchases. The experience and content tools we built continue to introduce new guitarists to the brand and guide them through their early playing journey - exactly where customer retention matters most.
